A total of 1,273 fisherfolks and fish vendors from the towns of Mariveles and Limay affected by the oil spill on July 25, 2024 finally got the much needed financial assistance worth P5,000 each last Friday.
Bataan Gov. Joet Garcia in his FB post said the distribution of cash assistance was made to replenish the livelihood of fishermen affected by the oil spill when the Terra Nova motor tanker carrying 1.5 million liters of industrial fuel sank off Lamao point.
The distribution held at the Limay Sports Complex was led by the governor himself, Limay Mayor Richie Jason David, Mariveles Mayor AJ Concepcion, 3rd Congressional District Chief of Staff Rollie Rojas, Provincial Administrator Alice Pizarro, BFAR Provincial Officer Harlyn Recabar-Purzuelo, Assistant Treasurer Maria Rosario Carlos and Office of the Provincial Agriculturist Consultant Ramon Garcia.
The oil spill incident involving Terra Nova was followed by two other incidents where motor tankers either capsized or ran aground off Limay and Mariveles preventing fishermen from catching fish for their livelihood. Some fishing grounds in Mariveles were hardly affected by oil spill but were prevented by Coast Guard to go fishing for their own safety.
